it was dark. it rained. then the stars came out. each cat then saw the other. they growled. grrr, GRRR. then they met. this painting was inspired by a style (manga) developed in japan in the late 19th century. it has a long and complex prehistory in early japanese art. this particular scroll was juried and exhibited in the art town of rockland, maine. a modern scroll painting from my ongoing series of coastal nature. traditionally scrolls were vehicles for displaying calligraphy/painting, capturing a feeling of nature/an idea, to be hung to set a mood, and changed often to match an occasion/season—sometimes 72 times (microseasons) a year! as with their traditional counterparts, my themes are similar: feelings and memory. like visiting my father in rural maine, with the moon over the islands, pointed firs and rocks along the shore, foamy waves on the surface. hedgerows abloom with wild roses swaying in the leeward breeze. a late morning haze, above the waves (sea smoke). my reinvention of japanese "kakejiku" are on synthetic fiber similar in appearance to rice paper, but stronger, waterproof and tear-resistant, and framed, ie, hung on black rods along the top and bottom edges. it arrives rolled in a box, ready to hang with one small nail (included).
