The Power of People

If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ve probably gone on a Facebook hiatus or sworn away Tumblr, but there is a great reason to go back. Humans of New York is just about the coolest Tumblr or Facebook feed out there.

“When my husband was dying, I said: ‘Moe, how am I supposed to love without you?’ He told me: ‘Take the love you have for me and spread it around."

Brandon Stanton started Humans of New York (HONY) as an expedition to photograph and catalog the people of New York. Since then, he has added short stories and quotes from the people he has featured. The result is pretty awesome.

Stanton wrote: These kids made me laugh. Despite their predicament, they were pretty excited about being on HONY. When I walked up, they were in the process of dismounting from the boat. But they helped me out by piling back in for the photo.

After graduating from the University of Georgia, Stanton took a job in bond trading and then proceeded to lose it. He was a little to risky. He moved to New York to photograph its inhabitants.

“This is a character” “Oh, so this isn’t you?” “It’s not me. But there’s a lot of me in here.”

On Stanton’s Tumblr bio he says, “Mom wasn’t too happy about that decision, but so far it’s gone pretty well. I’ve taken nearly 5,000 portraits and written 50 stories. And I’ve met some amazing people along the way.”

This little guy was walking home from school with his mom and sister. And, judging by his confusion, he had no idea how awesome he looked.

“I’m Studying to get a PhD in Neuroscience, but in my free time I like to perform in burlesque shows.”

So, when you eventually cave and come back to social media check out HONY Tumblr blog and Facebook page. It’s a pretty great way to procrastinate whatever you are really supposed to be doing online.

If you are looking to collect this type of artwork for your home or office, check out Joel DeGrand’s portraits on Zatista. We think they’re pretty cool too.

A Different Type of Art?
His initial goal was to photograph 10,000 strangers in New York and learn a bit more about their lives. Not surprisingly, the HONY (Humans of New York) project became much more than that ...
