Artist Statement:
I have lived most of my life in or near London, Ontario, Canada and through the years I have formed a strong emotional attachment to the surrounding countryside.
I am frequently inspired by older, weathered buildings and structures that I encounter.
I'm always inspired by the many moods, beauty and subtle charms of the countryside I call home. Many of my paintings arise from a simultaneous combination of emotional response and visual impact. I strive to translate my feelings and emotions into my landscape paintings. The subtle and challenging medium of watercolor best allows me express my vision of this area.
I often refer to my digital images and use them as a rough guide, along with memory and imagination to guide me in the painting process. I create detailed pencil studies and drawings before I start each painting which has, over time, helped me refine and develop my watercolor technique. I use many brushes from large to small for detail. I also use scrubbing techniques and frequently manipulate smaller amounts of paint with my fingers while holding a brush, which has evolved into reflex and a sophisticated form of finger painting over time. These elements come together to capture the sense of tranquility and mood I strive to capture in my paintings.
I love to paint in watercolor and create unique landscape art and I feel deep satisfaction when my viewers derive their own emotional response and pleasure from my art.
