"I believe in the power of beauty to inspire the preservation of the sacred in the Botanical World. I serve at the pleasure of nature."
Raphael Sloane has decidedly changed our visual perspective of botanical imagery. He has allowed blossoms to elegantly defy gravity or to sit as in a stately portrait. All the while their individual personalities leave their mark. The flowers appear to be radiating their own light.
Raphael has an extensive background in traditional photography. His many years as a motion picture cameraman gives him an exhaustive technical and visual foundation. For the past ten years he has used a scanner as his primary image capture tool. The scanner allows for images that are distortion free with infinite detail across the entire image plane. Archival printing is done in his studio.

Education:
All of the mechanical aspects of Raphael Sloane's training are self taught. Mentors have been a major resource for his aesthetic and spiritual training. One such mentor Sam Francis, the painter, told him "learn your craft get your chops and then consciously put it all aside and let the canvas dictate what needs to be done." Sloane says it took him years to grasp the concept.
