Artist Statement:
I am a professional artist based in Sussex and am known for my large, original semi abstract, contemporary landscape paintings which blend the near-abstract with the traditional. I have painted since I was three. It is the thing I am best at and it always makes me happy. I paint 3 or 4 times a week, sometimes for 5 hours at a time. I am very lucky and I know it.
My painting style is a fusion of Expressionist, Impressionist, Semi-abstract, Art Nouveau and something I term ‘memory impressionism’. This is where I go walking somewhere rural, look at and absorb the things I see and experience, and then come home and try to capture an ‘echo’ of the place from memory including any wildlife I may have seen.
I try to capture the essences of nature and landscapes – especially in ancient places like England. There is magic in this world that many people don’t get a chance to see if they live in cities. I see it and I like to share it.
I like to think that paintings have ‘little souls’ woven into them by artist’s and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability. My paintings call to those who similarly like to look beyond the material alone.
My driving ambition is to paint a way out of this universe and into a better one which is why most of my artwork features pathways, portals, and little mysteries.
One day I will disappear and you will know I have succeeded… Gill
Please contact me if you would like to make an appointment to view artwork (East Sussex) or to discuss a commission. I am always very happy to meet people!

Education:
I did an art foundation course at Chelsea in 1979 and completed a fine art degree in Brighton in 1983.
Awards & Distinctions:

Professional/Teaching Experience:
About Me:
I am an independent professional artist based in Sussex and I sell my artwork online and in exhibitions. I did a foundation art course at Chelsea in 1979 and completed my Fine Art degree in Brighton in 1983. I am a certified adult education Art Tutor trained by Central Sussex College in 1999.
Experience:
As an artist I have been at it since I was three. As well as selling my own work consistently, I have sold over 250 portrait commissioned paintings in oils or watercolours or drawings, painted many murals and spent 7 years painting Beatrix Potter characters on furniture for the high end nursery designers, Dragons of Walton Street. All this experience has made me a competent all round artist so it was natural that I eventually began to teach some of these skills. In 2000 until 2016, I taught watercolours, oil painting and drawing classes for Central Sussex College. Then from 2017 onwards, I began to teach from my own home and currently run 3 classes a week (details on my website). My students love my easy going light hearted manner and the fact that I can easily demonstrate how to do things in any medium. I often begin my lessons with demonstrations and this really helps less experienced students to feel confident. It also means I can have total beginners as well as intermediates and experts all in one class if needed. Because I can work quickly on art demos, and am very good with people generally I have often been asked to demo at fairs or exhibitions or at art societies including at one event recently at Henley which I did in coordination with the well-known SAA (society for all artists).

Artistic Influences:
I like lots of artists but have not been influenced by any one person. If I could own a piece of art by another artist however, it would be a Gustav Kimpt, a PreRaphaelite painting or a Dutch interior painting
