Four Ways To Style Large Art In Your Home
Four Ways To Style Large Art In Your Home

Have you ever walked into a room and felt blown away by the decor? That’s how you can make guests feel by placing large pieces of art in your space.

Large artwork can transform a room from dull to fascinating. The larger the art, the more powerful the sense of presence and mood.

It takes thought and care to select the right original art for your home. Make your chosen art look its best by following our top tips for styling large art!

1. Use of White Space

It’s all about placement. Ensure there’s enough white space (or negative space) around the art. You want to give the painting some breathing room. It’s a great way to create an aesthetically pleasing wall and draw the eye to the work.

A good rule of thumb is to use the rule of three eighths. This means that the white space on either side of your painting should be about three-eighths of the width of the artwork.

Avoid placing large paintings on very small walls. The artwork doesn’t need to take up ¾ of the wall to look good. In fact, that may just make the art look cramped, creating an illusion of a smaller room. Empty space is a good thing and makes a space feel larger and more open. Plus, proper use of white space will also give the illusion that the art is much bigger than it actually is.

2. Pair Them Up!

Find a pair of works. You can combine paintings from different artists or choose multiple pieces from a series that go together or complement each other. There are so many options.

Consider how the colors and themes of two art pieces will look together. They don’t have to completely match, and if you’re looking for more of an eclectic look, consider mixing genres. Play and experiment until you find a combination that feels right.

If you’re going for a pair, remember that large art takes up more space. So, it’s best to do this when you have a room big enough to display multiple pieces and still have enough white space. If this is possible for you, you’ll be very pleased with the result.

3. Measure Everything!

Never skip this part. Measure everything ahead of time.

Before you even start looking, you can measure how big of a piece you can fit on your wall. Don’t forget to consider the space that your furniture takes up. By getting a good sense of your ideal size, you know exactly what to look for when you search. On Zatista, you can use our size filters to find a painting or work of art that suits your sizing needs.

Pro tip: when you find a painting you like, write down the dimensions and then measure if it would fit well in your room. A good way to keep the size of the artwork in mind when designing your room is by putting painter’s tape on the wall in the shape of the painting. This will give you a better sense of how much space it will take up. It makes for a great visual reference!

4. Embrace Minimal Decor

Let your art become a focal point by decorating the rest of the room with simple and minimal decor. You may even want to consider a monochromatic palette with other colors only present as an accent – however, this isn’t absolutely necessary. Remember that too much clutter or overpowering decor will be distracting and the artwork will only blend into the background, or worse, add to the clutter.
