When we picture artists, we see them in many ways. Perhaps they are working, paintbrush in hand, dancing in their studio, writing their novel, or even…behind a computer. As art and technology get more and more advanced, so does the art of animation. But is art made from a computer as valid as art made on paper? And what if it’s a mixture of both? Let’s dive in.
In 1908, French artist Émile Cohl created the first animated film using what came to be the 1908 Fantasmagorie, where he drew out every frame by hand. It was through Cohl’s work that the idea of animation spread to the US.
What is animation? It’s a method of making pictures where they are manipulated into becoming what seems like moving images. They are drawn and hand-painted onto a transparent celluloid sheet and projected onto film. Today, it’s not all hand-drawn, but there are still some remnants left of this old style of animation. Today most animation is done via CGI, also known as “computer-generated imagery.”
