ART DISCIPLINES
Within Art, the term discipline (or technique) refers to the method in which the artist chooses to create their work or express themselves. Broadly speaking, this could include musicians, dancers, as well as painters, sculptors, and photographers (just to name a few).
While the range of art disciplines are extremely wide, for Art in Depth we’ll keep it a bit more narrow, focusing on “physical art”. In the world of physical art, the most common disciplines (most available on Zatista) include:
PAINTING
The possibilities are endless… oil on canvas, acrylic on glass, watercolors, just to name a few. The substances and support artists employ when painting inspire us every day.
DRAWING
Charcoal, pencil, and pen and ink just to name a few. From the earliest days of humanity to contemporary art, the discipline of drawing is a mainstay of artistic expression.
MIXED MEDIA
A broad discipline where any material or substance is fair game. Mixed media artists surprise and amaze us with not only what they use to compose their work, but how they craft it.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Today, we think of digital capture for photography, but the mediums available go far beyond. Film, printing, Polaroid, are just a few choices for photographers when capturing images.
PRINTMAKING
Including mediums such as screen, metalcut, linocut and woodcut, printmaking ranges in style from Abstract to Pop-Art. On Zatista, all works in this category are signed, hand pulled, limited editions.
DIGITAL
Digital technology is used to create a masterpiece. Often created on a screen, the final product can be displayed in various forms. With technology at our fingertips, this discipline is on the rise.
SCULPTING
Wood, precious materials, metals, ceramic, clay and even found objects. Sculptures come to life in three dimensional form, from miniature, to life-sized and beyond.
FILM & VIDEO
This multi-dimensional discipline creates images, concepts and stories using moving pictures and often audio. Recorded or displayed in person, they push the boundaries of both the creator and their audience.
MEDIUMS
What is a "Medium" when it comes to art?
Within art, medium refers to a type of material or substance used to create a work. The main two types of medium are:
“Substance” Medium
The substance, such as paint, ink, or watercolor that is applied to a surface.
“Support” Medium
The surface material to which a particular substance is applied to such as canvas, paper, wood, cloth, etc.

An art movement (or style) can be defined as:
“A tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy. Typically, this philosophy is followed by a group of artists during a specific period of time, which could be months, years, or decades.”
